Photography Institute

The Photography Institute introduces students to the power and impact of photography and how it helps to shape and visualize the world around us. Through the use of Episcopal High School’s state-of-the-art facilities and experiential programming, students will develop their personal photography aesthetic and portfolio.

Program Details

  • Classroom and studio time to learn and apply photography concepts
  • Field trips offsite around the nation’s capital to give students a real-world connection to photography
  • Experience one of the nation’s most prestigious and state-of-the-art boarding schools
  • Social events and activities to enhance the overnight camp experience
  • Daily Field Trips Include: National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Photography urban hiking tour (tentative)

Sample Activities

  • Photograph the National Mall at night
  • Direct studio-style portraits
  • Experiment with underwater and stop-motion photography
  • Edit and develop photos in Episcopal High School’s state-of-the-art photography studio
  • Prepare and install portfolios for display in the final gallery presentation

Meet the Faculty

Ben Courchesne

David A. Douglas

English, Associate Dean of Students

A native of Northern Virginia, Douglas has works in numerous public, private and corporate collections, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Chrysler Museum, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and the Academy Art Museum. His work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions, including exhibits with Chuck Close, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Lee Friedlander, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others.

At EHS David is the co-chair of the assistance team, leads the afternoon art option and coaches the Girls JV basketball team. He lives on campus with his wife Ann, his son Max and his dog Singer. He also has a daughter Scout ’06 and a son Gift ‘06.
